Term Definition
1E A notation on the bottom of Boyds Bears figurines to denote the first edition pieces. See also "Edition" definition. There are 3600 pieces in each Bearstone and Folkstone edition and 4800 pieces in each Dollstone edition.
2E, 3E, etc. A notation on the bottom of Boyds Bears figurines to distinguish the second, third, etc. editions from each other. There are 3600 pieces in each Bearstone and Folkstone edition and 4800 pieces in each Dollstone edition.
Add-On Any part of a piece that has been molded separately and then added to the main body of the piece.
Allocation The amount of product a dealer is allowed to purchase, determined either by a quantity or a dollar amount.
Annual A collectible issued yearly to commemorate a special occasion such as a holiday, anniversary or other special date or event.
Assorted Two or more pieces share the same stock number, but can be purchased separately.
Attachment Any part of a piece that has been molded separately and then added to the main body of the piece.
ATTH All Through the House series manufactured by Department 56.
AV Alpine Village series manufactured by Department 56.
Bisque A hard, nonabsorbent material used to make various collectibles. It is a kind of ceramic made primarily with kaolin, a pure form of clay, that is fired at temperatures approaching 2300° F.
Bottomstamp Identifying marks on the bottom of a collectible. Examples of bottomstamps would include logos, copyright years, quotes or phrases, marks for the year produced, collectible name, etc.
Broker An independent secondary market service which lists pieces for sell by collectors. Like the Exchange, the broker works as a middleman and requires a commission when the item sells. Commission is normally paid by buyer.
Bronze Paw Dealers The first level of a three tier system of Boyds Bears retailers who receive priority shipping and larger allotments of certain pieces. (Boyds Bears)
Case Mold A mold produced with a high density composite material that doesn't wear out as quickly as the more porous production molds. It is often referred to as the master mold.
Casting The first step in the production of a porcelain collectible. Liquid clay is poured into a production mold. When dry it is removed as a semi-firm piece.
Catalog Exclusives Early releases to a group of retailers who participate in a selected gift catalog.
Century Circle The highest Precious Moments dealer level designated by Enesco. This includes a very select group of retailers who receive early shipments of new pieces and exclusive products, bonus allocations of dated and retired pieces and more. (Precious Moments)
Chapel Exclusives Special pieces only available from the Precious Moments Chapel Complex in Carthage, Missouri. (Precious Moments)
Chip A place on the collectible where a small portion of the porcelain or ceramic has been broken off.
CIC Christmas in the City series manufactured by Department 56.
Clay Earthern materials, that hardens when fired at high temperatures and is used to make ceramic items.
Closed Production of this item was limited by either time or quantity and it is no longer available from the manufacturer.
Collectible Anything and Everything that a group of individuals collects. This can range from salt & pepper shakers to dolls to villages, etc. A true collectible, however, is something that increases in value over time.
Collectible Show An organized event, normally lasting from Friday evening until Sunday morning, sponsored by clubs, dealers, etc. Most shows include swap & sell events, room hopping, seminars, meals, games, prizes, etc.
Collectors Club A group of collectors who regularly meet to exchange ideas & information about a particular collectible line. Also, clubs sponsored by manufacturers who usually distribute club newsletters, and the opportunity to purchase items for Members Only, etc.
Commemorative An item specifically made to mark an event, anniversary or holiday.
DB Damaged Box. A secondary market term used when a collectible item's original box is in poor condition. It is a good idea to question the nature of the damage before purchasing if the box is important to you and your collection.
Distinguished Service Retailers Retailers, selected by Enesco, to receive early shipments of new pieces, exclusive products, bonus allocations of dated and retired pieces, etc. These retail stores are required to host an annual Precious Moments event. (Precious Moments)
DV Dickens Village series manufactured by Department 56.
Edition The total number of items produced with the same name. The exception to this is the numbering system used by The Boyds Collectible Ltd. See 1E, 2E, 3E, etc. at the beginning of list.
Emboss To mold or stamp a design or information into a product.
Enhancements Accessory pieces that add realism to a display, such as roads, signs, streetlights, mailboxes, etc.
Event Piece A collectible item which was released for a specific happening, such as a retail event or a collectibles convention. The piece is normally only available the day of the event.
Exchange A secondary market service which lists pieces collectors wish to buy or sell. The Exchange works as a middleman and usually requires a commission ranging from 10% - 25%, which is normally paid by the buyer.
Exclusive An item made especially for, and only available through, a specific store, buying group, event or exposition.
